‘Pirates 5’ Has Been Kidnapped And Disney Won’t Pay The Ransom

Someone has kidnapped Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Disney isn’t paying the ransom. And by “kidnapped” we mean that hackers have managed to get a hold of the upcoming Disney movie and are threatening to release it unless Disney pays them an insane amount of money, according to Deadline. Disney says they are working with the FBI and have no plans to pay the ransom for the movie.

The hackers said they would release bits of the film — in increments — if their demands weren’t met.

This is the second time in as many weeks of a company being hacked and had various forms of media to ransom. Netflix had the new season of Orange is the New Black stolen and also refused to pay. People will pay for convenience though and in Netflix’s case it’s a lot easier to stream than it is to torrent an entire series. The series hasn’t been released yet and we’ll have to wait to see how much impact the leak has if any.

This is also not the first time a major studio production found its way online. Once the screeners for Oscar season go out there always seem to be torrents going around for movies that get the early January release dates. There have been blockbusters that have leaked online which include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Expendables 3, Super 8, and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Pirates 5 hasn’t been released yet so we’re still weeks or possibly months away from knowing if the leak is going to effect the box office. However, this series has made $3.72B worldwide and tends to bring on families. They aren’t the ones torrenting movies so whether the production is good or bad it’s probably going to do fine regardless.

Maybe Disney should try Bryan Mills to see if he can get their movie back.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be released on May 26, 2017.
