Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert reunite for Roseanne Revival

Deadline is reporting that an eight-episode revival of Roseanne is in the works with series stars Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert all set to reprise their roles from the ’90s sitcom. In addition, Laurie Metcalf and others from the program (including The Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki) are in negotiations to return.

A bidding war has reportedly begun for the revival, with the likes of ABC (Roseanne‘s original broadcast network) and Netflix attempting to secure the revival. Netflix has gotten in the market of revived sitcoms with both Fuller House and a new version of One Day at a Time.

Roseanne originally premiered in 1998 and ran for nine seasons and 222 episodes, raking up seventeen Emmy nominations and four wins. What makes this revival news so bizarre, however, is the conclusion of the original Roseanne series retconned the entire show to a book Barr’s character had been writing, changing all of the bad things in her life “for the story.” The episode quickly became one of the most bizarre and controversial series finales in television.

The topic of a reunion for the series recently came up on Gilbert’s own series The Talk when star John Goodman appeared to promote Kong: Skull Island. When asked if he would be interested in the prospect of doing more, he replied: “Oh, hell yes… if we could get everyone together.”

Barr herself mused on what a “reunion show” of the series would look like in a blog post on her website back in 2009, saying: “DJ gets published; Darlene meets a woman and they have a test tube baby; Roseanne and Jackie open the first medical marijuana dispensary in lanford illinois, and pay off the mortgage before the house is foreclosed on; Mom sells a painting for ten grand; and most importantly, Dan shows up alive after faking his death.”
