This weekend, it’s happening again. The long-awaited revival of Twin Peaks is hitting Showtime on Sunday, May 21 at 9pm. Fans of the series have been waiting over a quarter century to get answers from this show. And we’re not sure how welcoming it will be for new viewers. It is a David Lynch show, after all. There’s every chance that you could be lost in the weirdness even if you’ve seen all of the episodes.
But this is an important moment for Peak TV. Twin Peaks was Lost before Lost. Twin Peaks was The X-Files before The X-Files. And most of all, Twin Peaks was the first modern TV genre drama to truly capture the imagination of millions of TV viewers. No one expected Twin Peaks to suddenly breakout and become a part of the cultural zeitgeist. Yet for one glorious season, Twin Peaks was everything. And then in 1991, it all went away during the second season, leaving fans on a cliffhanger that would never be resolved…until now.
